For members of our Defined Benefit (DB) Section
This includes pensioners and deferred members who are yet to take their benefits from the Whitbread pension scheme. The DB Section closed to new entrants on 31 December 2001 so this will only apply to you if you joined the scheme before 1 January 2002.

About the DB Section
The Whitbread pension scheme has a Defined Benefit (DB) Section, but it closed to new members on 31 December 2001 and closed to future accrual on 31 December 2009 – this means all employees in this section stopped building up pension after that date. Instead, employees joined the Defined Contribution (DC) Section and started contributing to their DC pension pot.
The DB Section has around 34,000 members, which includes pensioners and dependants who are getting a pension each month, and deferred members who haven’t started taking their Whitbread pension yet.
In the DB Section, you don’t have an individual pot of money; instead, the Trustees look after the scheme’s assets and pay everyone’s pensions from that money.
This section of the Whitbread pensions website provides some more detail about the DB Section and links to important documents, such as the latest Summary Funding Statement. This is a document we provide each year, which explains whether the scheme has enough money to pay all the pensions promised to members, and if there’s not enough money how Whitbread will make up the shortfall.
